Tavernas all throughout Greece are a special place. The meals can take 3-4 hours, you’ll eat enough to keep you full for the next week, and of course, you’ll want to go with your παρέα (also known as your “squad”).
Now, the key to finding the best taverna is this: the less luxurious it looks, the better the food will be. In Monastiraki, for example, many of the tavernas look nicer and more organized, but this is simply a tourist trap.
Oftentimes, the server will start you out will an aperitif like ouzo or raki, or simply with bread and olive oil. In my experience, it’s best to trust the server for your order. Most tavernas have a specialty dish that they will recommend, in addition to knowing which seafood is the freshest that day. Some tavernas don't even give you a menu, the serve just lists the dishes of the day! You will have dishes like a horiatiki (a TRUE Greek salad, which means no lettuce!!!), moussaka, fava with octopus, tzatziki with fried zucchini slices, and the most delicious fried potatoes. After feasting like a king, the server will usually bring fresh fruit, a slice of orange cake, or a digestif on the house.
Some of best memories are from tavernas, as I have always been in good company with good food, good drinks, and sometimes even good live music. Of course, having good company is the most important aspect of a successful taverna experience, because who wants to be stuck at a 3-hour lunch with people they don’t like?
And now, I’m going to let you in on the secret of why traditional Greek tavernas have some of the best food in all of Greece (and the world): the recipes come from the owner’s γιαγιά (“grandmother”). At other Greek or international restaurants throughout Greece, the food comes from more trendy, modern, or healthy recipes.
Okay, that's great and everything... but why would you want that when every Greek γιαγιά is secretly a Michelin-star chef?
So, some days you should look to enjoy the top-notch service, picturesque cocktails, and stunning views that are more common at other restaurants in Greece. But you really should try a traditional taverna on your next visit.
