My Family in Mykonos and Santorini

Updated: Dec 2, 2020

In April 2018 I graduated from the University of Michigan. Meanwhile, my parents, younger brother, and I were excitedly preparing for a two-week trip to Greece that we had been planning for the past year.

In July we took off for Athens, where we spent the first few nights. After visiting our relatives, we took off for Mykonos and Santorini.

In Mykonos, we stayed at the beautiful Cavo Tagoo, where we were treated to stunning views, wonderful service, and overall an amazing time. Many families hesitate to go to Mykonos, as it has a reputation for wild nights. However, this is due to overlooking the other beauties of Mykonos—and essentially why it became famous in the first place.

My family especially enjoyed Mykonos town shopping, home to many designer shops as well as quality, handmade Greek products. Ironically, designer Virgil Abloh was staying at the Cavo Tagoo with his family at the same time, and after making some conversation we learned about his brand Off-White was opening on the island that weekend. He told us the location and even gave us some tips for the Mykonos shopping (what a gentleman!).

As Mykonos is an island for “dressing to the nines,” the people watching is always a treat. People from round the world are always dressed in their unique, beautiful, and outgoing styles. During the day, there were so many options between the beach clubs, quiet beaches, and hotel pools; we certainly tried to make the most of our days there.

Next, we took the ferry to Santorini, where we stayed at one of most elegant, scenic hotels, the Santo Maris. Santorini is an absolutely beautiful island, created from the nearby volcano eruption many years ago during the Bronze Age (the same eruption that wiped out the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations).

The lava which created the island left a dry, clay-like soil—a winemaker’s dream. As such, Santorini is home to many nice (I definitely have a favorite) Greek wineries, being particularly known for the variety Assyrtiko.

One of Santorini’s biggest attractions is the sunset. My family on I rented a boat for an afternoon one day, where we were treated to a delicious dinner from the crew, which we ate on the boat, overlooking the sunset. I must say, if you find the right resources to go out on the Aegean Sea from Santorini—it is a truly unforgettable experience.

After this trip with my family, I thought I would never be able to go back to Mykonos or Santorini, as the bar was set so high with this amazing trip—and wow, was I wrong. There are infinite experiences and places to explore on these amazing islands.
