Deciding between Paros and Mykonos? Or better yet, are you headed to both? Let’s break it down.
Both islands are situated in the Cyclades, about 30 mins apart from each other by ferry.
They have quite a lot in common, including amazing food, bar scenes, beach clubs, shopping, and overall aesthetic.
If you are looking for more space while enjoying your beach day, it is definitely essential on both Paros and Mykonos to make reservations for beach beds. But of course, be prepared to pay a pretty penny for those beach beds, especially in Mykonos. Personally, I can spend 5-6 hours at the beaches on these islands. Time passes quickly when you are out swimming with your friends, having lunch, sipping wine, and listening to the beach club’s music. So, if that is your style, it is 100% worth it.
In terms of the shopping, the islands have some of the best boutiques, so close together. A tip for fellow shopaholics: leave some space in your suitcase for clothes you will buy while in Greece! One of my favorite features on most of the Cycladic islands is how late the stores are open. Don’t be surprised to find the store lights on and people shopping at around midnight.
Once in Mykonos, I dropped a tomato on my white dress (a tragedy), and on my way back to the hotel at around 11:30pm, my friend and I went shopping and I found a new outfit to wear for dancing that night!
Overall, the differences may seem small between Paros and Mykonos, but there are a few key characteristics that help to summarize the two.
Mykonos is one of the most LGBTQ+ inclusive places in Europe. Mykonos is expensive, and while the hotel and restaurant service can be average, the food, beaches, clubs, bars, and sites are incredible. And of course, people love saying they've been to Mykonos.
Pro tips: Mykonos boutique hotels have by far the best service. Additionally, you should always find out your hotel’s driving options in advance!! There are only about 30 taxis on Mykonos (no, that is not an exaggeration), so if your hospitality does not provide, you will need to rent a car.
Paros is a tourist hotspot, has more flexibility for budget, is more spaced out, and has a certain uniqueness which stems from its incredible variety. I recommend Paros to groups who have lower budgets or different budgets per person (don't worry, there are still plenty of expensive options on Paros).
Pro tips: The capital, Naoussa, is the best place to stay. Most of the shops, restaurants, and bars are located there (and of course are all incredible), and you can drive to the beaches during the day. Additionally, you can take a water taxi over to Antiparos for dinner at the port one night!
No matter your choice of Paros or Mykonos, I am sure you can have the most incredible time on these Cycladic islands!
