During quarantine I have found myself going through old photos and videos from travel. We all miss aspects of daily life and vacation alike, and today I have been dreaming of Hydra.
The island of Hydra is the perfect combination of Greek island and Greek village. With the trip being just over an hour from Piraeus by ferry, Hydra offers amazing views, delicious food and drinks, and great times.
Personally, whenever I’ve been in Athens too many consecutive days during the summer, I take the first ferry to Hydra the next day and return the same evening. You get off the ferry and are often greeted by donkeys, as cars are not allowed on the island. Of course, it is a fairly small island, so I always enjoy the village style walking paths (be warned ladies- do NOT go in heels!), and I like to spend my day near the port.
There are traces of history all around the island, as it was a naval base during the Independence War of Greece. After taking photos of the incredible view (and maybe posing by the donkeys), you just need to find the perfect spot to unwind. Thankfully, each and every restaurant or café can be a perfect spot. Personally, I like sipping a daiquiri with my feet hanging off cliff at Hydronetta- it’s a café with a view that is pretty hard to beat.
Walking through the villages takes you back in time, and you’ll end up at one of Hydra’s beautiful beaches (or if you’re like me, you’ll get lost and have to try another path). The days are relaxing, the nights are fun, and the locals are quaint. The island of Hydra is a favorite for locals and tourists alike, as it combines so many of the best qualities of Greece.
Whether you want to spend a day, or stay the night, you should find the time to visit Hydra on your next trip to the Greek islands!
